BRO EDDIE -- PUP tuition hike, death sentence for students

An inconceivable tuition fee hike, at this time of extreme economic difficulty, is nothing but a death sentence for thousands of Filipino students.

These were the words of Bro. Eddie Villanueva, standard-bearer of Bangon Pilipinas Party, in response to the reported  would-be 2,000% increase in the tuition fee of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).

The biggest state university in the country, PUP announced last week through its president Dr. Dante Guevarra that the increase from P12 per unit to P200 will take effect next semester on all incoming freshmen.

“With due respect to the concerned university officials, the issue on hand truly requires a serious second look.  Because it is the responsibility of the State to educate its people, any anti-student tuition hike amid worsening poverty diametrically opposes the very purpose of state universities,” said the Bangon Pilipinas Party presidential bet.

Villanueva underscored that most, if not all, PUP students come from poor families.  “But these are the students who truly know the value of hard-earned education.  They are purposeful, intelligent, and promising,” he enthused adding that denying these students access to affordable yet high quality education would mean losing by default to the economic encumbrances of the present the fight for a new generation of principled and learned leaders.

Bangon Pilipinas vice presidential candidate Atty. Perfecto Yasay vowed to increase the budget for the education sector three times more once elected in the position.

During ANC’s Harapan, an ANC vice presidential forum held at La Consolacion College in Manila last night, Yasay, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, said that it is time to increase the budget allocation for the education sector from the present two percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the UN-recommended standard of six percent.

“Ang budget ng edukasyon sa bansa ay two percent wherein ang normal (standard) is six percent. Dapat i-angat na natin ang budget (on education) thrice,” Yasay said during the forum.

The former SEC chair also said that the school curricula should be geared toward the honing of the students’ entrepreneurial skills.

“Our education in the country is now geared towards employment. It should be geared toward entrepreneurship para maturuan ang ating mga mag-aaral na maging negosyante at magamit nila whatever materials are available in their community,” he explained during his one-minute time limit at the forum.

Zamboanga City – “I want you to know that Mindanao tops the list of Bangon Pilipinas Party’s priorities. Our vision for a peaceful and progressive Mindanao is backed up by a platform of government that is not only attuned to the needs of our people in this region but is also relevant to the total development of our nation.”

These were the words of Bangon Pilipinas Party standard bearer Bro Eddie Villanueva when he spoke before thousands of cheering supporters at Plaza Pershing in Zamboanga City last night, March 17.

Villanueva added that should he get elected in office, the people of Mindanao will also get “what you duly deserve, yet you never get to enjoy.”

As embodied in our platform that is specific to Mindanao, I guarantee you that you shall reap the blessings of equitable distribution of national wealth and income through the ‘Assured Regional Pie’ Policy in the national budgeting process,” he said, adding that Mindanao shall see the day when its riches are enjoyed by its own people under a Villanueva government.

BANGON PILIPINAS CELEBRATES CHRISTIANITY IN CEBU

CEBU CITY – Bangon Pilipinas Party came full force here early this week led by its presidential candidate Bro. Eddie Villanueva and his running mate Perfecto “Jun” Yasay for sorties in key areas around the metropolis, including in several public markets.

The two were joined by eight (8) of their nine (9) senatoriables – singer and former Camarines Sur Vice governor Imelda Papin; lawyers Jess Paredes and Ramoncito Ocampo;  broadcaster Kata Inocencio; Muslim leader Count Habib Adz Nikabulin; broadcast journalist Alex Tinsay; lawyer Rey Princesa and educator, Dr. Israel Virgines.  Dr. Zafrullah Alonto, an Islam expert, was in Mindanao to represent the party in a meeting among key Muslim leaders.

The group also attended a gathering of about a thousand Christian leaders at the Cebu International Convention Center organized by the Intercessors for the Philippines (IFP), a Christian organization which has been continually praying for the country in the past 20 years.

On Tuesday evening, Villanueva, Yasay and their senatorial slate joined thousands of supporters in a Miting de Avance in Fuente Osmeña.

The visit of Bangon Pilipinas here coincided with the 490th celebration of the arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who landed in Homonhon Island in Samar on March 16, 1821 .

“We chose to be here in Cebu on this significant day because this day marked the birth of Christianity in the archipelago and while Magellan landed in elsewhere, it was the Cebuanos who first embraced Christianity,” Villanueva explained.

He said the arrival of the Portuguese and Spanish explorers ushered in a new beginning for the Philippines, as it paved the way for the unity of the 7,107-island archipelago.

“The year 2010 is a significant year.  This marks a new beginning for our beloved nation.  According to the Bible, every nation that reaches 490 years has an opportunity to put an end to all wickedness, unrighteousness, and injustice resulting in shocking poverty,” Villanueva said.
